Menchu Gutiérrez

Menchu Gutiérrez (Madrid, 1957) has published several books of poems, including El ojo de Newton (Newton's Eye) (Pre-textos, 2005). She has also written works in prose, all of which have been published by Editorial Siruela; titles include Viaje de Estudios (Study Trip) (1995), La tabla de las mareas (The Tide Table) (1998), La mujer ensimismada (The Conceited Woman) (2001), Latente (Latent) (2003), Disección de una tormenta (Dissection of a Storm) (2005), Detrás de la boca (Behind the Mouth) (2007), El faro por dentro (Inside the Lighthouse) (2011) and La niebla, tres veces (The Fog, Three Times (2011), which is a brief compilation of her early novels published by the same publishers. She has written an essay on snow in literature titled Decir la nieve (Say the Snow) (Siruela, 2011) and a literary biography of St John of the Cross (Omega, 2004); and she has translated works by E.A. Poe, J. Austen, A. Brontë, J. Brodsky and W.H. Auden.

She has collaborated with the cultural supplement of El País and other literary magazines. She has also organised a number of cross-disciplinary seminars at centres that include Casa Encendida and Casa del Lector in Madrid, Fundación Botín de Santander, Arteleku and Koldo Mitxelena in San Sebastián.
