This seminar aims to serve as a showcase for projects and initiatives that have been carried out from the beginning of the open call for applications for the eremuak programme in December 2010. A wide variety of artists, groups, projects, publishing houses and other hybrid undertakings have benefited from this programme, which aims to build bridges and networks linking different producers working on the Basque art scene. This meeting in Arteleku aims to provide food for thought by organising three debates and exchanges of opinion focusing on some of the key issues dealt with in the programme proposals.
1) Debate: "Editing / Publishing / Distributing"
One of eremuak's principal concerns was to foster diverse publications in the form of artists' books, compilations of written texts, the minutes of seminars or specific projects related to art critique and theory. This debate brings together a number of different stakeholders (artists, writers, publishers, etc.), all working on different kinds of projects, with the aim of discussing and exploring the production conditions and distribution and exchange networks they require to develop their proposals.
2) Debate: "Production and contemporary art"
Production, subsidies, fees, training and professionalism are all terms which have been linked time and time again to artistic production. In the current period of economic difficulties, in which the public model of support and promotion of contemporary art is being called into question, this session will be asking questions such as: what are the direct consequences for art of the ongoing institutional redefinition of artistic production and exhibition? And how does its jostling for place with the ever-growing cultural industries affect the specificity of the language of contemporary art?
3) Debate: "spaces-scenes-programmes"
Over recent years, and in the successive institutional models that been established in the Basque region, a number of different programmes have been established by platforms, groups and individuals to offer stable agendas that provide opportunities to professionals to come together and exchange ideas. These programmes contribute to making up an art scene which is at times linked to institutions and at times "housed" in different, constantly changing spaces or even private premises. This debate examines the way in which these proposals are organised, how they function, what their objectives are and how they may develop on the new scene that is currently emerging.
In addition to the debates, the seminar also features talks by a number of different speakers, including Antonio Collados, Jon Mikel Euba, Ana Pahissa, and Aimar Arriola, who will be conversing with Jeleton.
A display area will be set up to exhibit all the materials generated within the framework of the programme (both publications and audiovisual material). The seminar will also serve as a platform for launching issue 0 of the eremuak newspaper.
